Local regulations

Schleswig-Holstein
SpeciesBag limitMin sizeOpen season
European FlounderRegulation (EU) 2019/1241, Annex VIII, Part A (Baltic Sea, sub-divisions 22-32)Jan 1 – Dec 31
NO EU MINIMUM SIZE IN THE NORTH SEA — flounder is absent from Annex V, so nothing supranational applies in the German Bight. It IS listed for the Baltic at 23 cm in ICES sub-divisions 22–25, which covers the German Baltic coast. Inland and coastal Land rules may set a size of their own. FishRadar publishes no figure here rather than borrowing the Baltic one for the wrong sea.
European PlaiceKüstenfischereiverordnung SH, as tabulated in the Merkblatt (Stand 01/2026)min 27 cmJan 1 – Jan 31; May 1 – Dec 31
The ministry gives two sizes — "Nordsee 27 cm" and "Ostsee 25 cm" — and this pack shows the stricter 27 cm, so a 26 cm Baltic plaice that is in fact legal will be shown as undersize. The closed season 1 February to 30 April applies to FEMALE plaice only ("weibliche Scholle vom 01. Februar bis 30. April"); the pack closes the whole window because sexing a plaice on the beach is not something a visiting angler can be expected to do reliably.
Sea TroutKüstenfischereiverordnung SH and Binnenfischereiverordnung SH, as tabulated in the Merkblatt (Stand 01/2026)min 40 cmJan 1 – Sep 30
THE Schleswig-Holstein fish — 40 cm on the coast and 40 cm inland. The closed season is CONDITIONAL, not absolute: 1 October to 31 December applies to fish "im Laichkleid" (in spawning colours), with "silbrige Fische mit losen Schuppen" — bright silver fish with loose scales — expressly excepted, so a clean silver sea trout may still be kept in that window. This pack encodes the window as closed because the exception depends on the angler judging the fish's condition, and the conservative reading is the one that cannot get a reader fined. Inland the closure is longer and unconditional: 1 October to 28 February. Schleswig-Holstein sets no daily bag limit for sea trout (unlike Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which caps it at three).
TurbotKüstenfischereiverordnung SH, as tabulated in the Merkblatt (Stand 01/2026)min 30 cmJan 1 – May 31; Aug 1 – Dec 31
30 cm; closed 1 June to 31 July in the Baltic. The ministry table states the closure for the Ostsee only.

Licensing:

  • combined — residents Fischereischein, issued for life after passing the Fischereischeinprüfung (§§ 26–27 LFischG). It must be carried and shown on demand, and is valid only once the annual Fischereiabgabe has been paid. Not issued below the completed 12th year of age — "Einen Fischereischein erhalten keine Personen, die das zwölfte Lebensjahr noch nicht vollendet haben" — and younger anglers may fish under the supervision of a licence holder. Licences from other Bundesländer are valid in Schleswig-Holstein as long as the holder's main residence is not in Schleswig-Holstein., non-residents Urlauberfischereischein — a time-limited exception from the licence requirement under § 26 LFischG, whose validity "auf 28 hintereinander liegende Tage zu begrenzen ist". In the Küstengewässer it needs no further permit, EXCEPT on the Schlei, the inner Neustädter Bucht, the inner Lübecker Bucht/Travemünde and the Untereider from the B5 road bridge at Tönning to the Nordfeld lock, where an Erlaubnisschein from the holder of the fishing right is required as well. In all Binnengewässer an Erlaubnisschein is always required. People whose main residence is abroad can also obtain a full Fischereischein in Schleswig-Holstein.
  • combined — residents A Fischereischein is required to fish, and it is issued only after passing the Fischerprüfung. In addition, a Fischereierlaubnisschein for the specific water is required — the Fischereischein alone does not entitle you to fish anywhere. Both must be carried. Rules, fees and the minimum age are set by each Bundesland., non-residents Visitors need the same two documents. Several Bundesländer issue a short-term Touristenfischereischein or Urlauberfischereischein without the examination — Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg among them — but not all do, and the conditions differ. Check the Land you intend to fish in before travelling.
