  • No fish counts. A chorus is a wall of overlapping voices; separating it into "137 fish" isn't measurement, it's theater.
  • Quiet does not mean empty. Plenty of catchable fish never call, and callers go silent outside their season and hours. Listening adds information; silence subtracts none.
  • Very shallow water filters the bass. Skinny water physically struggles to carry the lowest frequencies far — a deep-voiced drum can be closer than he sounds faint.
