The answer, delivered by fish biologists, was better than any of the theories: thousands of male plainfin midshipman, nesting under the shallows, humming in chorus to call females in. What Exactly Is Making That Sound?

The plainfin midshipman is a hand-sized, big-headed fish that spends its days buried or hiding under rocks in the intertidal and shallows. In breeding season, a nesting male anchors himself under a rock and advertises. His instrument is a pair of sonic muscles wrapped around his swim bladder — among the fastest-contracting muscles measured in any vertebrate. Contracting on the order of a hundred times per second against the gas-filled bladder, they turn the fish into a small, persistent subwoofer. A single male can sustain his hum for very long stretches, and a colony of them locks into a drone that carries through water, through boat hulls, and — on still nights — into the air above the surface.

His East Coast cousin, the oyster toadfish, goes for quality over duration: a short, resonant "boop" repeated every few seconds, so reminiscent of a compressed-air horn that scientists named it the boatwhistle. Where midshipman colonies hum like machinery, a toadfish flat sounds like slow, patient foghorn practice.

When and Where You'll Hear It

  • Season: roughly May through September in North America — the spawning window. The hum starts near dusk and can run past midnight.
  • Conditions: calm, warm nights. Wind and chop mask it; flat water lets it through.
